Rules and Guidelines

for Continuing Students

As a continuing student, first and for most, please make sure you know the rules applied for your immigration status. Follow three strategies listed below to maintain F1 status. If you are unsure of anything, make an appointment to talk with our international student advisor before taking action. You can also find additional information on immigration and visa rules here.
As time progresses and you are familiarized with the studying workload, you may want to get involved more with the community to maximize your learning experience here. Read two instructions below and consider your working options Some other common issues, which the OIE can help you:  
In your last semester, you may register less than full-time, but you have to obtain a reduced course load approval, please see instructions for the reduced course load below. Moreover, please inform us of your post-graduation options within 60 days of your program completion. Remember you have three options after you graduate: apply for Post-Completion OPT; continue your education at a higher level; and return to your home country. If you wish to work in the US after graduation, please see instruction for optional practical training (OPT) below.
